Selection Process
A fair and equitable process of hiring of staff is important at Be in Christ. Therefore, recruitment will be conducted professionally, ethically, and in a manner that upholds our values and beliefs.
Selecting and hiring will be carried out in accordance with the values and beliefs as expressed in the Be in Christ Handbook of Faith and Life.
Executive Director
Selection and appointment for the position shall be carried out by the Be In Christ of Canada Governing Board of Directors in accordance with the bylaws of the BIC.
Operations Team
Staff team additions are made in consultation with the Director of Ministry Development and Operations and the Executive Director. Hiring for positions on the operations team will follow the guidelines as noted below.
Job Posting
When a position is open a job description will be posted on the denominational website outlining the key responsibilities, the experience, skills, working conditions and education required for the position. The hiring manager will define the role and determine what combination of skills and experience is needed. Behavioural requirements, competencies and the key success factors will also be considered.
Job postings will include: position title, employment terms, responsibilities, qualifications required and information related to the BIC and the position.
All vacancies are posted internally to allow current staff to apply. Given the size of our team, vacancies are also posted externally. Where to post will be determined by the hiring employee and the Director of Ministry Development and Operation.
The Director of Ministry Development and Operations is responsible for receiving and screening the candidates. Once the applicants have been screened, a short list of most suitable candidates will be created and invited for a formal interview. As a general practice, candidates will be interviewed by at least two staffing individuals.
Probation Period
The first three months of employment with Be in Christ, or as otherwise specified in the staff member’s signed contract or letter of offer, provides a mutual period of evaluation, called the probationary period. This gives both the new staff member and the organization a chance to decide whether this employment relationship is in the best interests of both. The probationary period applies to all staff. Staff group benefits are not provided during the probationary period.
At any time during the first three months of probation, the staff member may resign without giving notice, although they are requested to provide one weeks’ written notice. Conversely, the staff member may be released by Be in Christ upon the provision of one week’s written notice.
Please be aware that your supervisor may request that a probationary period be extended if they believe more than three months is required to assess performance and fit. This will be discussed with the new staff member and clear goals will be outlined.
Hiring Family Members
Hiring of relatives will be discouraged because of the potential of real and/or perceived conflict of interest. If a family member is being considered for employment, it should be noted that family members will only be allowed to work at BIC Canada if they are not supervised, directly or indirectly, by another family member.
All staff hires of family members of present employees require the approval of the Board of Directors in consultation with the Executive Director.
New Staff Orientation
When you begin working with the BIC, an onboard orientation process of introducing you to the organization, staff members, and the Be in Christ’s vision and values, policies, practices, and procedures. The more quickly you become comfortable within the organization, the sooner you can make a contribution through the use of your God-given gifts.
Your supervisor will provide details of the onboarding process and the dates of the orientation. During your onboarding period your supervisor will introduce you to the other staff members, familiarizing you with the office facilities and work policies, review your role and expectations, provide you with a sense of how the role fits within the organization, and ensure that you have the tools you need to effectively engage in their work.
